Signs of ageing

What happens throughout your years.

20s

The skin is smooth and well nourished with few lines. Eyes are bright. The lipid layer plumps the skin, softening facial contours so that light reflects evenly to give a beautiful bloom. Smoking, sun damage and pollution are usually the only causes of degradation of the epidermis in this age group.

30s

Although the complexion is still rosy, the delicate skin around the eyes begins to sag. As the lipid layer diminishes, habitual expressions lines increase. With less ‘padding’ under the skin the eye sockets become more visible. By the late 30’s muscles start to lengthen causing cheeks to look flatter. The mouth corners settle lower and the lines between mouth and nose corners become deeper.

40s

The face begins to look generally tired as muscles sag and flatten. Jowls form from the relaxing of the cheek contours and skin looks drier, more lined and looser. Eye shadows and bags are common as the fatty layer disappears around the eye socket, causing skin to dip into the hollow. Eyes look dimmer. Wrinkles on the forehead deepen and ‘frown lines’ can become permanent. The lower facial height gets smaller as the soft tissues drop.

50s

delicate eye skin falls lower over the eyelid and the eyebrows become sparse and lose their height. The nose tip drops. Vertical lines appear round the mouth as the lips get thinner. Folds from nose of the mouth increase, continuing as ‘marionette’ lines down to the chin. The jaw-line starts to look uneven and softer. Skin appears dry, thin and of uneven tone, and unless the diet is good it can appear grey and flat. Appearance is more tired, more world-weary.

60s and 70s

folds are more entrenched, contours run into each other and the face is softer with less definition. The eyes look smaller with the hooded appearance of the eyelid. The skin, though more lined in the 60’s and 70’s can look less dry than at middle age. The muscles continue to drop and due to lack of use they become up to 40% smaller. Bone demineralisation is also noted in this age group: as muscle mass is lost the facial bones become weaker.

Does Faceworks make a difference?

The photos right were taken eight weeks apart.

They have not been retouched or doctored. Compare the skin tone, the height of the brow, the lines in the crease above the eye and the shadows and lines under the eye. The eye itself looks wider and brighter.
